Annie Buckley

Annie Buckley is an artist, writer, curator, and educator. Her large-scale print series, Hybrids (2008), of women morphing into trees is part of a multidisciplinary project; it includes a novel, Mayday, where the protagonist, in a comatose state, imagines herself as a metamorphic guru spreading a message of hope by giving strangers flowers as she, in turn, transforms into an actual flowering tree herself. A special edition of smaller Hybrids (2014) was created in collaboration with De Soto Gallery.

Annie Buckley is the director of the School of Art + Design at San Diego State University and the founding director of Community-based Art and the Prison Collective, an initiative that brings arts programming to state prisons and local regions that would not have access to the arts otherwise. Her writing about contemporary art has been published in Artforum, Art & Education, Art in America, Artillery, the Huffington Post, and KCET Artbound since 2005.
